What is a sentence? (वाक्य क्या है?)
A sentence is a group of words which make complete sense अर्थात शब्दों के ऐसे समूह को वाक्य कहते हैं, जिसका अर्थ पूर्ण हो।
Example:

- Anuj types letters. (अनुज पत्र टाइप करता है।)

- Shashi played footbal yesterday. (शशि ने कल फुटबॉल खेला।)
- Nandu reads book. (नन्दू किताब पढ़ता है।)
अब उपर्युक्त वाक्यों के word order (शब्द क्रम) बदलकर देखें।

उपर्युक्त वाक्यों में word order (शब्द क्रम) भंग से इन वाक्यों का अर्थ अटपटा हो गया। अतः वाक्यों में एक निश्चित अर्थ का होना अनिवार्य है।
English में एक special order (विशेष क्रम) से शब्दों को रखकर ही वाक्यों का निर्माण किया जाता है। इसमें सबसे पहले Subject (कर्म) को रखा जाता है। अर्थात English में वाक्यों का शब्द क्रम निम्नलिखित हैं
Subject + Verb + Object
English में एक special order (विशेष क्रम) से शब्दों को रखकर ही वाक्यों का निर्माण किया जाता है। इसमें सबसे पहले Subject (कर्म) को रखा जाता है। अर्थात English में वाक्यों का शब्द क्रम निम्नलिखित हैं

Example:
- Jack and Jill went up a hill. (जैक और जिल पहाड़ पर चढ़ा।)
- Madhu did her home work. (मधु ने अपना गृहकार्य किया।)

The following types of sentences found in English language. (अंग्रेजी भाषा में वाक्यों के निम्नलिखित प्रकार हैं)।

1.Assertive Sentences (विधिसूचक वाक्य): इस प्रकार के वाक्यों द्वारा किसी स्थिति को बोध कराया जाता है। सूचना का प्रकार Positive और Negative दोनों में से कोई एक हो सकता है। ऐसे वाक्यों को Statements (कथन) भी कहा जाता है।

2.Interrogative Sentences (प्रश्नवाचक वाक्य): इन वाक्यों को questions भी कहा जाता है। इनकी सहायता से कुछ पूछा या प्रश्न किया जाता है। इस प्रकार के वाक्यों के अंत में Question mark (प्रश्नवाचक चिह्न ‘?’) लगाया जाता है।
(A) Helping verb से आरंभ होने वाले वाक्यः
- Are you a teacher? (क्या तुम शिक्षक हो?)
- Does she help you? (क्या वह तुम्हारी मदद करती है?)
- Shall I go there? (क्या मैं वहाँ जाऊँगा?)
- Did Sarita come here yesterday? (क्या सरिता कल यहाँ आयी थी?)
(B) Wh-/How आदि से आरंभ होने वाले वाक्यः
- What is your name?
- When did you come here?
- How did you like it?
- Whose pencil is this?
नोट: Negative Interrogative Sentences में not का प्रयोग subject (कर्ता) के बाद किया जाता है।
Example:
- Are you not coming today?
- Did Deepak not bring toffees today?
- Had Sarita not bought some good books?
- Was the library not open?
3. Imperative Sentences (आज्ञासूचक वाक्य): इन वाक्यों की सहायता से order (आदेश), humble request (विनय), Suggestion (सुझाव), advice (परामर्श), Instruction (उपदेश), prohibition (निषेध) आदि के भाव व्यक्त किये जाते हैं।
इन वाक्यों में Subject छिपा होता है जो सदैव you होता है। इन वाक्यों में verb की bare form का प्रयोग किया जाता है, और वाक्यों के अंत में Full stop (.) लगाया जाता है।

- Have mercy upon us. (हम पर दया कीजिए।)
- Never tell a lie. (कभी झूठ मत बोलो।)
- Go at once. (तुरंत जाओ।)
4. Exclamatory Sentence (विस्मयसूचक वाक्य): इन वाक्यों से आश्चर्य, हर्ष, शोक, प्रशंसा आदि भावों की अभिव्यक्ति होती है। ऐसे वाक्य प्राय: what, Bravo, Hurrah, How, Alas आदि शब्दों से आरंभ होते हैं। इन वाक्यों के अंत में not of exclamatory (!) (विस्मयसूचक चिह्न !) किया जाता है।
Example:
- Alas! I am ruined! (हाय, मैं बर्बाद हो गया!)
- What a beautiful rose! (कितना सुंदर गुलाब है!)
- How fat the boy is! (लड़का कितना मोटा है!) ।
- Bravo! You have done well! (शाबाश! तुमने बहुत बढ़िया किया!)
- Oh! How hot it is! (ओह! कितनी गर्मी है।)
5. Optative Sentence (इच्छासूचक वाक्य):
Example:
- Would that I were a doctor! (काश मैं डॉक्टर होता!)
- God may help you! (भगवान तुम्हारी मदद करें!)
- May you live long! (तुम दीर्घजीवी हो!)
- O that I were a bird! (काश मैं पक्षी होता!)
- Long live our democracy! (हमारा लोकतंत्र अमर हो।)
